Anabolic and androgenic steroids are quite well known even among people who have never used them. But when and where did they originate?
Let’s take a closer look. In this article we’re going to focus on Methandrostenolone the well known muscle building steroid. By the way, Methandrostenolone is marketed under a variety of trade names that include Dianabol Anabol, DBol and Ganabol. The Dianabol steroids were developed in the late 1950’s by John Bosley Zielgler and he was the guy who pioneered the steroids use in bodybuilding. The steroid was developed to help the American weightlifting team to compete with the Russians who had been using testosterone with great success in the Olympic games. Apparently, John Bosley Zielgler found out this out after having a few drinks with the coach of the Russian weight lifting team. Its said that the Russian coach asked John what he was giving his athletes, bewildered, John asked what do you mean. The Russian coach explained to John that he was administering the weightlifting with synthetic testosterone. Immediately on his return, John began experimenting with testosterone on himself, one of his assistant coaches and three weightlifters. Shortly after administering testosterone, they all experience gains in weight and strength. Unfortunately, they also experienced a number of side effects. Although he seen the potential of this steroid he believed he could develop a different steroid compound that would mimic the anabolic properties of testosterone, but without the undesirable side effects. In his quest to develop a new steroid he was supported by Ciba Pharmaceuticals. This made his job a lot easier, because working with Ciba give him unlimited access to their huge library of research resources, libraries, medical papers, reports and experiment archives. During his research, he narrowed down the drug Methandrostenolone as the most suitable candidate that could match testosterones anabolic properties. In 1960 Olympic games in Rome, he gave the steroid drug to the US weightlifting team. Unfortunately, they still lost to the Russians. Some say, that being given the steroid made them slack off on their training. These initial poor results did not stop athletes from taking the Dianabol steroid. In fact, more athletes began to abuse the steroid to the point that many began to suffer from liver disease. The abuse of the Anabol Dianabol steroid made John Bosley Zielgler regret that he ever introduced it in the first place. In the early 1960’s Anabol was actually prescribed to women as a tonic. However, this was soon stopped when those who were taking the drug began to develop masculine characteristics. Dianabol’s 17α-methylation steroid profile means that it can pass through the liver intact. This means the steroid, unlike many others, can be administered orally with a tablet or pill. The steroid has the effect of lowering the affinity for SHBG, which is a protein known to deactivate steroid molecules, and therefore, preventing them from reacting in the body. The positive consequences of this are rapid muscle growth. Although methandrostenolone can produce impressive gains in muscle mass and strength, it has many side effects. The high aromatization effects of methandrostenolone means higher incidence of bad gains. This relates to higher incidences of water retention. Many people who use it can take on a bloated look giving the impression that they are big. However, these gains soon disappear once they come off the steroid. Anabol is also hepatotoxic and highly estrogenic. Long term use can damage the liver and men are at greater risk of developing gynecomastia (man boobs). To counteract these side effects many guys will use aromatise inhibitors during a Dianabol cycle. Today, as with all anabolic steroids, Dianabol was made a controlled substance in the United States of America since the year 2001. Under the Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 1990 the possession and administering of 17α-methandrostenolone Dianabol is a criminal offence. However, this has not stopped many bodybuilders and athletes who continue to use the steroid illegally.
